Session Aims and Objectives

Session Aim

The aim of this session is for each participant to be able to understand factors, which increase the risk of manual handling injuries, and clearly demonstrate the principles required to minimise these risks.

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this session participants will be able to:

  • Be able to define the term manual handling

  • Be able to identify manual handling risks to care staff

  • State and demonstrate the “SMART” principles of manual handling

  • Be able to state the factors that increase forces when pushing and pulling and how these forces can be minimised

  • Be able to competently complete manual transfers including sit to stand and in/out of bed

  • Be able to demonstrate the procedure required moving a resident that has fallen on the ground

  • Be able to select appropriate equipment for different transfers

  • Be able to competently use a slide sheer, lifting machine and standing machine
