Session Aim

The aim of this session is for each participant to be able to understand factors, which increase the risk of manual handling injuries, and clearly demonstrate the principles required to minimise these risks.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this sessions participants will be able to:

  • Define the term manual handling

  • Have a general understanding of the anatomy of the back including the structure and function of the disc

  • State 3 reasons why exercise and stretching are important elements in minimising the risk of manual handling injuries

  • Demonstrate 3 exercises to minimise the risk of manual handling injuries in their workplace

  • State and demonstrate the “SMART” principles of manual handling

  • Be able to state the factors that increase force when pushing and pulling and how these forces can be minimised

  • Define hazardous manual handling

  • Have a general understanding of assessing and controlling manual handling risks

  • Competently state 3 signs of warning of injury

  • Competently state the 5 principles of prevention of injury
